Roger Nash Baldwin
1884 - 1981

Lawyer, civil rights activist, co-founder and director of the American Civil Liberties Union (1920-1950). Nash was interested in communism in the early part of his career, and his installation of known communists on the board of the ACLU helped give the civil rights movement its early reputation as a radical left-wing movement. Although he eventually saw through the ideology, and purged its advocates from the board, its roots continue to shape the ACLU today.

So long as we have enough people in this country willing to fight for their rights, we'll be called a democracy.
