Albert Schweitzer
1875 - 1965

German medical doctor, African missionary, accomplished organist, author of The Decay and the Restoration of Civilization and Civilization and Ethics (1918). Schweitzer established a major medical mission in Gabon, Africa, saw it destroyed by French militants in 1917 and himself imprisoned in France, and then rebuilt it into a 350-bed hospital and a 150-bed leper colony. He was awarded Queen Elizabeth II's Order of Merit, and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1952.
