Emiliano Zapata
1879 - 1919

Mexican revolutionary. From 1909 to 1919 Zapata led ever-growing armies in a series of battles with forces of the Mexican government and other rebels in an effort to install agrarian reforms and recover land taken from Mexican peasants. As each agreement he negotiated with Mexico's ever-changing leadership collapsed, he fought again to win influence over the next leader. Shortly after Venustiano Carranza became president of the republic of Mexico, a secret meeting was arranged to trap Zapata and he was murdered by government forces.
