Charles Van Doren

American editor and writer, author of A History of Knowledge: Past, Present and Future and other works, and co-author (with Mortimer Adler) of How to Read a Book. Though perhaps best known for collaborating in a fraud on the late-1950's television game show Twenty-One with the show's producers (they fed him answers to the quiz questions), Van Doren has done much respectable work since for Encyclopedia Britannica, in several books written under a pseudonym, and especially in his ambitious A History of Knowledge.

Nothing is more conducive to progress than the widespread belief that it can occur.
