Indira Gandhi
1917 - 1984

Long-time prime minister of India (1966-1984, excepting 1977-1979 when she was in opposition), daughter of its first prime minister and mother of another. She tried, with some success, to create political stability in her country, appeasing both the Hindu and Muslim communities and developing a fragile economy in the newly-independent land. She was assassinated in office, as was her prime minister son, Rajiv, after her.
