John W. Dafoe

1866 - 1942

Editor of the Manitoba Free Press (later the Winnipeg Free Press) and one of the most influential political figures in Canada in the first half of the twentieth century. He was an articulate advocate for classical liberalism and a fierce opponent of organized labour unions and the "communist revolutionaries" who led them through the Winnipeg General Strike of 1919.

Politics in its more primitive and vigorous manifestations is not a game or a sport, but a form of civil war, with only lethal weapons barred.

1931 - from his book Clifford Sifton
Even majorities have rights.

quoted in Columbo's New Canadian Quotations by John Robert Columbo
