Sir William Schwenk Gilbert
1836 - 1911

English playwright, humorist, director, producer and poetic satirist, author of The Bab Ballads and of the plays H.M.S. Pinafore (1878), The Pirates of Penzance (1880), The Mikado (1885) and many other works. Gilbert's collaboration with composer Arthur Sullivan produced some of the most popular comic operas in history.
