1824 - 1863

American military leader. Jackson was teaching at the Virginia Military Institute at the outbreak of the American Civil War. He took active service and soon earned the nickname "Stonewall" by leading a fierce and unyielding defense near Harper's Ferry, Virginia. He further distinguished himself in campaigns in what is now the Shenandoah Valley before being wounded in friendly fire and dying a week later from his wounds.
