William Tecumseh Sherman
1820 - 1891

American Civil War general. Sherman won several decisive battles before leading a savage "scorched earth" charge through the state of Georgia, capturing Savannah and splitting the Confederate forces in two. Soon afterwards, the Confederates surrendered to Sherman and other Union generals. Sherman then spent 18 more years in the army, and was appointed its Commander in Chief by President Ulysses Grant.
