Eduard A. Shevardnadze
1928 -

President of the former Soviet republic of Georgia. Shevardnadze fought crime and corruption in Georgia before being suddenly elevated to the position of Soviet foreign minister by Mikhail Gorbachev in 1985. He served competently until the dissolution of the Soviet Union, whereupon he returned to Georgia and was eventually elected to its Presidency in 1995. Author of The Future Belongs to Freedom (Free Press, 1991)
