Emma Goldman
1869 - 1940

Russian-born American feminist, writer, revolutionary, anarchist. Goldman was a fiery labour activist who once told unemployed men in New York that it was their right to steal bread if they were hungry. She spent years in American prisons for her parts in violent demonstrations, including a Chicago rally at which a bomb killed a number of policemen, and was eventually deported to the Soviet Union. Goldman spent the final few years of her life in Toronto, Canada, where she completed her thousand-page biography entitled My Life.
