Franz Kafka
1883 - 1924

Austrian author of The Castle, The Trial (1914), The Metamorphosis, and other works. Kafka was trained as a lawyer and worked as a clerk at an insurance company before dying young of tuberculosis. Writing was his avocation rather than his vocation, and most of his works were published after his death. Some of them are now among the most celebrated novels of the 20th century, and have made Kafka and existentialism synonymous.
