William Proxmire

American senator (Democrat) from Wisconsin (1957-1989), best known for the "Golden Fleece" awards he began awarding in 1975 to projects that he considered to be wasteful government spending. His first Golden Fleece was awarded to the National Science Foundation for conducting an $84,000 study about why people fall in love.
