Rt. Hon. Arthur Meighen

1874 - 1960

Ninth Prime Minister of Canada (1920-1921). Meighen was a mathematician and lawyer who served in various ministerial portfolios under Robert Borden. He is remembered as one of the finest debaters and orators ever in Parliament. However he is also remembered for his ardent pursuit of Manitoba Premier John Bracken to replace him as leader of the Conservative Party in 1942. The deal brokered by Meighen to win Bracken's participation saw the Conservative Party's policy become similar to that of Bracken's Liberal-Progressive party, and the party's name changed to the "Progressive Conservative" party. The re-made party failed to win government until it was led by John Diefenbaker 14 years later, and has held power for only 18 of the nearly 60 years since.

One great secret of successful debate: when you have a man under your hammer, never be tempted into doubtful ground and give him a chance to disgress. How often I witnessed men in the House who had a case, and who really had their opponents cornered, doddle off into other ground and give the enemy a chance to change the subject and come out not too badly worsted.
