Richard Whately
1787 - 1863

One-time Fellow of Oriel College (Oxford), Anglican Archbishop of Dublin, member of Parliament, author of Logic (1826) which dominated the field for 20 years, and Rhetoric (1828) which remains influential today. Throughout his career, he was a champion of the free market system, insisting it was the best economic philosophy.


It is generally true that all that is required to make men unmindful of what they owe God for any blessing is that they should receive that blessing often and regularly.

Every one wishes to have truth on his side, but it is not every one that sincerely wishes to be on the side of truth.
